"A lot of people drive too fast for the wildlife and the share the road mentality that exists in the (Stradbroke) townships, which is why the council has a 'Care for Straddie' tourist information campaign with information available on barges, in the island's newspapers and other sources," Cr Ogilvie said

PROTEST ORGANISATION MEETING The Weinam Creek parking proposal does not cater for the needs of our community, it has the potential to adversely impact upon many of our residents and also impedes future island economic progress. THE PROBLEM THE ISLANDS HAVE REGARDING TRANSPORT •Growing island population places greater strain on existing transport modes One port access from mainland Island residents dependent of mainland jobs Lack of suitable public transport systems require mainland vehicle for island residents Cost of transport to and from the islands is increasing THIS HAS LED TO: •Inadequate parking provision at Weinam Creek •No forward planning io cater for future island population of over 20,000 people
*Bottlenecks for commuters at peak times of travel and concern about
meeting future •Higher cost of delivery of goods and services to the islands Council rmms lU utj iHt FOLLOWING:
*Reduce
the current parking from 884 spaces (car park 734^and overflow area
of 150) to a •Introduce parking fees on ALL parking spaces •Remove the guarantee of a parking space th:it current secured parkers pay for. Force people to park in residential streets and create tension with mainland residents. COUNCIL'S ACTION WILL DO THE FOLLOWING: •Create further parking problems as it reduces the current number of car parks available •Does not plan for future population growth which is the Council's responsibility •Creates a money making venture for the Council at the financial cost of the islands •Creates further divisions in our City where the islands continue to be treated unfairly •Force families off the islands as cost of transport and parking are unaffordable Place additional community stress on the islands WHAT THE COUNCIL SHOULD DO: The Council has a responsibility to provide solutions for the islands and plan for the future growth. The Council must not take any action that creates more problems for the islands. The Council must NOT proceed with their parking plan. SPEECH BY MARK EDWARDS read on ... |

Car Parking Fees up - Council wants blood out of a stone from islanders. Islanders are spitting chips at a plan to drive up the cost of parking at Weinam Creek ferry terminal.
Is Redland City Council trying to socially engineer island folk to take public transport rather than to use the Redland Bay ferry terminal as a mainland "garage" for their cars?
Secure parking fees - which currently stand at about $213 per quarter, or $850 a year will rise to between $2190 and $3285 for a year of non-stop parking with concessions if cars were taken out of the complex regularly.
Redland City Council Mayor Melva Hobson said the Council wanted to make sure everyone had equal access to parking. "The user-pays system will help partially fund construction and also deter people from using the facility as a long-term permanent carpark, which minimises available spaces,"
If you wish to protest this fee increase, the draft Redland Bay centre and foreshore master plan is open for public comment until December 5. For information, www.redland.qld.gov.au, or contact 1300 665 660.
